Learning by experience is deeply imprinted in memory than words or formulae.
LK Singhania education centre has taken up a Herculean task of making the study of physics entertaining and simple. A Physics workshop was conducted from 18th of July to the 20th of July 2010 by Dr. BRAJESH PANDEY of IIT Kanpur, at present assistant professor of physics at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of technology Uttar Pradesh.
OBJECTIVE: The workshop was designed to address and develop the skill of how to make physics more enthusiastic in school going children by simple, hands on practical and informal lab activities.
ABOUT THE SESSION: Over 450 student participants explored various topics .They were exposed to the theoretical underpinnings of physics in a fun filled environment.
The competent communicator showed short and moderate experiments to assist physics teaching. Many experiments demonstrated in this category had many purposes; they were eye catching, entertaining and highly informative.
Workshop helped to taste demonstration of teaching strategies and construction of lab equipments from everyday materials which prompted students to carry out small experiments with an open mind.
It was interactive Physics where aspects of interpretation and misconceptions were discussed freely.
Over a hundred informal lab activities took shape in these three days. Topics like Mechanics, Heat, Optics, Magnetism, Fluid mechanics, Waves Electricity were covered in the workshop. The discovery of a gentle touch equivalent to one Newton force is worth remembering. Newton’s third law demo using two ring magnets, a double cone going up on an inclined plane, the secret behind the ever flowing water from the magical pot, siphon principle -the list goes on.
The open house at the end of third day was a brain storming session. Participants brought out various topics like space , black hole, magnetic dipole, Large Hedron Collider at Cern, to name a few.
The valedictory session was conducted on 20th of July .The student participants appreciated the efforts of the Principal and school administration in spreading SCIENCE education. The teachers expressed their satisfaction on what they added to their skills.
Conclusion: If children are involved in doing activities or get first hand observation the concepts of abstract subject like physics too, become clear and close to heart. The impact was clear-the workshop will enhance and strengthen the physics education in the campus.
